I have a friend who thinks silver is healthy, though fluoride is toxic and a conspiracy by the government to do ??? (doesn't make sense to me, so I don't remember). As a trained chemist, the thought of intentionally ingesting silver freaks me out, but that's just because I'm "duped", and being closed minded. And I haven't studied the anecdotal "evidence", and watched the conspiracy videos. Right, and I'm not going to. He also finds himself in the uncomfortable position of siding with Glenn Beck, in that climate change isn't caused by human activities, and there are these many scientists that say so. Turns out, most of those scientists aren't scientists, and of those that are, they're not scientists in the field of climate change, so that leaves, what 100 scientists out of 1,000,000 who deny the science? Kind of reminds me of the cherry picking of FA. I even know enough biology to discount most of his health theories, and when I point something out to him that seems obvious to me, such that we don't really absorb very much through our skin, he's oblivious, won't believe me. And he's SURE that 9-11 was an inside job, despite the idiocy of our previous administration, because the way the buildings fell, etc. My ex is a materials scientist, and it makes sense to him, as he actually knows about steel, etc. But this guy is NOT one to let science get in the way.

I just change the subject. He finds us scientists annoying, because we're irrational to want numbers, controlled or at least empirical studies, and we him, as much of his stuff seems silly or even dangerous, to us. Plus, I have the annoying habit of pointing out his glaring contradictions when I see them, which is often. You can't convince anyone who won't believe the science, why bother?

Not at all...

When I started weight losing, 2 years ago, I wore a 9W. Now I'm in a 6.5 regular. That was 87 pounds ago.

Oh, I totally do this. It's just there, in front of me, and then I'm eating it. Didn't want it, wasn't hungry, didn't think about it. That's something I'm working really hard on right now: trying to be conscious of when I'm in those situations and remind myself that I'm there for the COMPANY, not the FOOD. It's hard, though.

Can you believe people eat spicy brownies here? Like, with lots of cayenne, or similar sacrilege. Obviously, I do not like. Call me old fashioned, I think most food is better with a bit of heat, just not chocolate. I feel similarly about garlic-doesn't belong in ice cream, chocolate. Spicy ice cream might be okay.

I don't understand black holes. Physics makes my eyes glaze over, don't know how I managed to pass 3 quarters of it.

Oh yeah, that's a really common attitude. You know, back when I was still eating meat, I actually really liked mcdonald's hamburgers. When I ate there I always got a value meal because I figured there was no point in skimping elsewhere since I was being so 'bad' by eating that big mac or whatever. Except, of course, that eating just a big mac with water or a diet drink is, calorie-wise, not that much. Like a small-ish meal. We're so conditioned to categorize foods instead of seeing how they can fit into our particular ways of eating that we often end up sabotaging our own efforts to eat less.

To your list I'd add that a lot of folks (myself included, though I'm getting better about it) have really bought into the all-or-nothing mentality. As in, "well, if I'm going to have a 150-calorie drink, that's already a lot of calories, so I might as well say f*ck it, and have a 300-calorie drink. And a pastry." It isn't rational, but that guilt/rebellion thing never is.

[...] If you’re not, then who cares if one latte has 70 more calories than another? 2) As I said in this post, lots of people have absolutely no clue as to the amount of energy they’re using or eating. [...]
